Although A Streetcar Named Desire, a cult classic of theatre and film, dates back to 1947, the play remains captivating due to its complexity of personal relationships. It does reverberate with our present moment, especially in view of its portrayal of gender issues in a predominantly patriarchal society, class divisions and the disappearing middle-class. Presenting the conflict between two worlds, the real and the fictional, the play is even more brutal now than when it was first staged.
