New Readings

Reading is one of the basic activities in theatre, but it is rarely shared with the public. In the first season of New Readings, called Lines from Antiquity we focused on discovering classical texts that had not yet been staged in Slovenia. In the 2014/15 season, we presented or revived several Slovenian plays and stage read them. We reached for the early plays of Slovenian playwrights as well as for their late plays that may be perhaps more difficult to stage. We discovered intriguing plays that have not been staged yet. Stage readings were followed by post-show talks about the plays, allowing an in-depth insight into the Slovenian drama treasure trove.  Since the 2017/18 season, we have added a creative writing workshop to the programme. Mentored by the playwright and dramaturg Simona Hamer it aims to present the potentials of the future: young Slovenian playwrights. The process is based around creative group meetings and individual writing. The starting point for the short plays is a shared theme. A theatre omnibus of diverse newly created texts is presented to the public as a stage reading. During the three seasons of New Readings we have presented plays Varja Hrvatin, Sandi Jesenik, Lev Mastnak Trobentar, Kaja Nakani, Jernej Potočan, Evelin Bizjak, Eva Kučera Šmon, Urša Majcen, Kaja Novosel, Ana Zupan, Zala Mojca Jerman Kuželički, Nina Kuclar Stiković and Leja Veldin. The plays written in the framework of New Readings have been published in the literary magazine Literatura and aired on Slovenian national radio.
