Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1606) is one of the plays that reach deepest into the darkness of man and bare the motives of the cruellest acts. It is a spectacle of passion that results in the perpetration of radical evil and can be interpreted as a study of the anatomy of the darkest crimes. The evil of Macbeth is creepy, but strangely attractive, and it pervades the whole world, from the intimacy between the main character and his “innocent” wife, to matters of state and natural phenomena.
This staging is marked precisely by a view through the intimate. By setting the story in the intimacy of a living room or kitchen and stripping the protagonists of everything superfluous, Macbeth, with all its cruelty and paradoxes, presents a vivisection of today’s relationships and a spectacle of evil through the smallest cell of society.
