Marino (his voice)

After her father’s funeral, Anamarija, a middle-aged actress, visits her childhood friend, who is now a farmer living somewhere in Primorska. She wants to entrust him with what is left from her father’s property. She is moved by the farmer’s ill-fated life: his wife is namely in a mental hospital, while at home he keeps a mentally handicapped child locked in a room. A real shock follows when the farmer unambiguously explains to Anamarija that the idiot was conceived by her late father in one of his drinking escapades. In short, Marino is actually her half-brother.
Seeing it as an opportunity to enrich her life, she decides to adopt and take care for the boy. Anamarija is namely a person who, both in her life as well as in her career, wants to discover something more, however, she comes upon numerous obstacles, including those in herself.
Her husband Peter is a professor of fine arts but also a never-to-be painter and a typical failure. At first he vigorously objects to her decision but later he becomes less relentless when Anamarija invites Ida, a pretty final-year student of the teacher training college to live in their house and look after the mentally handicapped Marino. When we are about to expect a classical love triangle, the idiot, the central character of the play, interferes in the course of events. Although being the main character, he actually never appears on stage and his constant presence can only be conjectured.
Marino adores playing with Peter’s paints and in his simple and spontaneous autistic world creates superb paintings that are real works of art. The plot complicates further and develops into a chilling psycho-thriller where the solution is placed in the far future by the author.

Saša Pavček is an actress. The Pure Well of Love is her first play.
