In the second half of the 18th century, European explorers in Tibet discovered a unique form of art, Tibetan ache Ihamo. A combinations of story-telling, theatre, dance, singing and ritual, ache Ihamo performed among the nomad people at their gatherings as well as in front of Dalai Lama at Tibetan religious festivals. It was quickly discovered that Ihamo is a very ancient art form that stems from the roots of theatre and performing art itself. And so the most famous Tibetan play was also the very first translated text from the Tibetan language: two versions of Tchrimekundan, the French translations by Jacques Bacot (1914) and the English translation by Millicent H. Morrison (1925) were published well before the first translations of Tibetan Book of the Dead.
