In Jonathan Spector’s play Eureka Day, we follow the parent-teacher association gathering at a private school in California. Those present perform breakneck linguistic acrobatics in order to maintain political correctness and extreme inclusivity at all costs, in accordance with school policy, but it turns out that excessive tolerance clearly masks actual intolerance. In this sharp-witted comedy, we witness the clash between two faces of so-called “woke” ideology: the earnest pursuit of tolerance and openness, and its unchecked, excessive application that drifts into emptiness and absurdity. Although Eureka Day is primarily a comedy, in light of today’s shifting political landscape, it also resonates as a poignant lament—an effort at tolerance that all too often ends up undermining itself.
