Social and Sociable

Literary evening and talk about Liliom

The Cultural Centre of the Embassy of Hungary, the Balassi Institute in Ljubljana invites you to an event, co-organized by the SNT Drama Ljubljana and the Slovenian Association of Literary Translators in honour of the recently deceased translator and dictionary author, editor and writer Jože Hradil.

It was Jože Hradil who translated Liliom, one of the most important Molnár’s plays, which opened at the SNT Drama Ljubljana in February 2016. A resident members of our ensemble, Aljaž Jovanović and Tina Vrbnjak will also take part in the event. Written in 1909, Liliom is a play about longing that surpasses one’s modest living circumstances and leads to the fulfilment of personal dreams. Liliom is a hero beyond any mediocrity who follows his dreams resolutely, regardless of the consequences. The world of Liliom is appallingly similar to the world we live in, since many people do not allow themselves to dream or revolt against their socio-political circumstances. The current production of Liliom, directed by Selma Spahić, is therefore characterized by a critical view of a society undergoing a post-socialist transition.

Join us at the talk on Thursday, 5 May at 18.00 at the Cultural Centre of the Embassy of Hungary in Ljubljana, the Balassi Institute, in Barvarska steza 8 (Vila Urbana). Free entry.
