The Slovak National Theatre will present its critically acclaimed and multiple award-winning production Hound Dog on the Main Stage of SNT Drama Ljubljana on Saturday, April 26, at 19.30.
Hound Dog, which received the prestigious Anasoft Litera Award for Best Slovak Novel in 2011, is a brilliant, magically realistic and at the same time self-ironising narrative about the Slovak spirit—not only in the period following the Velvet Revolution but also in the years thereafter. With the sharp eye of an insightful and experienced observer, Pavel Vilikovský captures the feelings of a post-communist society in the 1990s, a time when the door to the Western world suddenly swung open. Hound Dog is a masterful work about literature and culture, interwoven with irony and wit, yet full of sensitivity and understanding.
In this seemingly simple story, we meet the editor of a publishing house called Iks Ypsilon, who is tasked with presenting two Slovak authors in Austria—though they may not be the most representative of Slovak literature. The editor’s narrative creates space for a multitude of micro-stories, tragicomic situations, brilliant associations and razor-sharp commentary on themes of Slovak purity, national character and small-mindedness.
Adapted and directed by Dušan D. Pařízek, the production won the 2024 Dosky Award for Best Production of the Season, and Pařízek received the Dosky Award for Best Director of the Season. Since 1996, the Dosky Awards have been the most prestigious theatre awards in Slovakia. The creative team also includes dramaturgs Miriam Kičiňová and Mário Drgoňa, set designer Dušan D. Pařízek, costume designer Kamila Polívková and composer Peter Fasching.
The cast features Alexander Bárta, Ľuboš Kostelný, Robert Roth and Richard Stanke.
