Titus Andronicus is considered one of the most controversially understood plays by William Shakespeare. The current Croatian staging, directed by Igor Vuk Torbica, a progressive director of the younger generation, is driven by a reflection on the current state of the world, characterized by a mixture of fear and lethargy, comfort and uncertainty, in which we are dazed by irresistible consumerism and numbed by the violence that the media is bombarding us on a daily basis. We, the children of the 21st century, are permeated by horror and blackness, but do we realize at all what this actually means? Do we really feel (with) the countless daily casualties of individual or mass violence? That is why we are staging Titus Andronicus, a drama about a major crisis of a leader, and about his absence; it is a testimony to a generation gap, the blindness of the ambitions of the older generation, who is (not only metaphorically, but also literally) devouring its children, about the young people who are losing their battle with the real world as a result of their own passivity and short-sightedness; and, perhaps even more importantly, as a polygon for the enquiry of the acutely present triviality of evil.

»Sreten Mokrović plays Titus Andronicus in the current ZKM production, directed by Igor Vuk Torbica, in a thoroughly refreshing manner, but within a convincing, dare I say, a significantly original acting register.«
