The Liberation of Skopje is Dušan Jovanović’s most frequently staged and best-known play. Its journey has been marked by covert Communist Party censorship, remarkable success across the former Yugoslavia, tours reaching as far as Australia and the Americas, and countless revivals.

Ahead of the new production at the SNT Drama Ljubljana, Dr. Gašper Troha, director of the Slovenian Theatre Institute, will revisit the play’s fascinating history. Using archival photographs of legendary productions, he will explore the questions: What drove its success? How was it received in various stagings? And how was it understood in different parts of the world and in shifting historical contexts?
