Svetlana Makarovič and Milko Lazar

Text and performance: Svetlana Makarovič
Original stage music, clavichord: Milko Lazar

In The Saga of Hallgerd, Svetlana Makarovič has quarried her favourite Icelandic narrative tradition and embarked on a struggle between Christianity and paganism, raging in the 10th century. Beautiful Hallgerd, who clung to old traditions, respected her fellow people and loathed injustice, played a leading role in this conflict. It was her pride and rebellious nature that brought a curse upon her. This is the reason why Icelanders tend to avoid the name of Hallgerd to this very day. The text has inspired Milko Lazar to compose stage music for a literary-musical evening.
