When Cyrano de Bergerac premiered on 28 December 1897, it was met with amazing acclaim: the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin venue in Paris practically exploded with cheers. It was a response that Edmond Rostand, the author of the »heroic comedy«, definitely could not foresee, for he was afraid of creating a flop. The first actor to appear in the title role was Coquelin the Elder, one of the greatest theatrical figures of the age. In subsequent productions, the role of Cyrano was invariably played by other major actors. In terms of casting, the same happened in Slovenian professional theatre productions. In Slovenia, the play was first staged at the Ljubljana Drama Theatre in 1924, directed by Boris Putjata. What was the response of the audience at the time? What were the subsequent productions like at the Ljubljana Drama and in other theatres?
