Michelangelo Buonarroti is a play by Miroslav Krleža, written in 1918 during his expressionist phase. It is this phase of his creative output that makes him one of the greatest European playwrights. His early work was marked by several dominant themes, such as the idea of a superman, a genius capable of providing the society with a new sense and a decisive impetus to head on towards a utopian perspective. It was with such intention and vision that the great Michelangelo embarked on the painting of the Sistine Chapel, portrayed in the play. In the process, he encountered many challenges and defeats brought about by the social reality.
Directed by Sebastijan Horvat, Michelangelo is the first co-production of the CNT Rijeka and the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Notably, Horvat, is one of the few directors who does not shun Miroslav Krleža – the bard of Croatian literature. Horvat has taken the challenge and staged Krleža with his innovative and contemporary approach, and broadened the context from a genius artist to a contemporary everyman.
