SLOGI and Drama lecture and discussion series
Dr. Matic Kocijančič
With nearly 30 Slovenian productions of his works, Tennessee Williams is among the most frequently performed American playwrights in Slovenia. His first play to be staged in the country was The Glass Menagerie, presented in 1953 at the Ljubljana City Theatre under the direction of Bratko Kreft. That same year, the Prešeren Theatre Kranj produced A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by Andrej Hieng. This marked the beginning of a strong theatrical presence for Williams in Slovenia, with subsequent productions of his major works, including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Orpheus Descending. Over the following decades, both major Slovenian theatres and smaller theatre companies regularly staged his plays.
Dr. Matic Kocijančič, curator and head of the archival collection at the Slovenian Theatre Institute, will present photographic and critical materials related to the early Slovenian productions of Williams’ plays.
