A Drummer

Simona Semenič (1975) is a Slovenian playwright and performer. She has won three Grum Awards (the most prestigious Slovenian award for best new Slovenian play) and numerous other awards both in Slovenia and abroad. Her dramatic opus includes 24hrs (2006), You didn’t forgetYou Just Don’t Remember Anymore (2007), I, the Victim (2007), 5boys.si (2008), the feast or the story of a savoury corpse or how roman abramovičthe character janša, julia kristeva, age 24, simona semenič and the initials z. l. found themselves in a tiny cloud of tobacco smoke (2010), onethousandninehundredandeightyone (2013), seven cooks, four soldiers and three sophias (2014).

The play while i almost ask for more or the parable of the ruler and wisdom (2011) is set in an unspecified past, in a palace in which a king and his two ministers rule over a country. The king is egocentric, arrogant and prone to violence, as rulers often are. The ministers belong to two different poles − one assesses the crisis in the country and provides realistic and constructive suggestions to resolve the problems while the other creates problems which require the government to rule with an iron hand and justification for the various dubious imperial measures.

Though Simona Semenič’s play takes place in an almost fairytale-like framework, the ruthless anatomy of reign is a vivisection of cynical governmental strategies and unscrupulous manipulations. Despite the touch of medieval imperial absolutism unfolded by the author with a kind of almost King Ubu-like humour, the pain is recognizable, just as it is today.

This is a cruel play, written in the typically radical style of the playwright, who is presenting herself to the Drama audience for the first time.
