Titus, a victorious Roman general, brings home as his captives Tamora, Queen of the Goths, and her three sons, the eldest of whom is sacrificed by Titus's sons. Saturninus, the new emperor, and Bassianus, his brother, both claim the hand of Titus’s daughter, Lavinia, but Saturninus renounces Lavinia and marries Tamora, who with her lover, Aaron the Moor, is determined to be revenged on Titus for the death of her son. Her two remaining sons, Demetrius and Chiron, meet Bassianus and Lavinia in the woods. They kill Bassianus, throw his body into a pit, ravish Lavinia, and cut off her hands and tongue. Titus’s sons Quintus and Martius fall into the pit and are accused of murdering Bassianus. Aaron informs Titus that they will be pardoned if Titus cuts off one of his hands and sends it as ransom. Aaron, however, returns the hand along with the heads of the two sons. Titus, driven mad, takes revenge by killing Demetrius and Chiron, and serving them baked in a pie to Tamora. He kills Lavinia, Mutius (his youngest son, who is trying to protect his sister), then Tamora, and is himself killed by Saturninus, whom Lucius, the last remaining son, then kills. Aaron, meanwhile, has been captured and is condemned by Lucius, now the new emperor, to be set breast-deep in earth until he starves to death.
