Nežka Gets Married was written in 2009 by the Slovene writer, playwright and director Vinko Möderndorfer. The title shows that the author was inspired by the Slovene playwright Anton Tomaž Linhart’s noteworthy comedy Follies of the Day or The Marriage of Matiček (1784). Both the names of the protagonists (Matija, Neža, Tonči) as well as one of the most comic situations are all based on this classical play. However, modern Matiček is not a young and reckless servant but a middle-aged teacher of Slovene language who works in a secondary school. He has been living on his own for over twelve years, ever since his mother passed away. His settled life of a Slovene teacher turns upside down when he meets Neža, a twenty years younger, vivacious but indecisive literature lover. They are a fresh couple in love enjoying linguistic as well as culinary and sexual aspects of living together. Their bliss is marred by Neža’s ex-boyfriend Tonči, a successful mechanic
and car salesman. One afternoon, when Neža is alone at home, he shows up to claim his beloved one … Witty dialogues, vibrant vocabulary (including many pet words and erotic expressions) and unexpected comic turns enrich this contemporary love travesty. Nežka gets Married won the competition for best original Slovene comedy at the Days of Comedy Festival in Celje in 2010.
