Boat For Dolls is Milena Marković’s third play. Marković is a young Serbian playwright and poet who, in the last decade, has won recognition in Serbia and throughout Europe.
The play suggestively depicts the life of an artist through references to various fairy tales and their characters. As a girl on the verge of adolescence, the heroine leaves home. Travelling through different stages of life, she takes on the identities of well-known fairy tale characters, from Alice, Snow White, Goldilocks and Thumbelina to the witch from Hansel and Gretel. She moves at the social margins, in the world of mimicry and petit-bourgeois manners, in seemingly artistic circles. Her life is not a fairy tale—it is not even especially nice—but painful life experiences only make her stronger in her artistic determination.
